Garibaldi began his military career in the Sardinian Army before becoming involved in an unsuccessful republican plot, which necessitated his flight in the Uruguayan Civil War, he joined the forces of King Charles Albert of Sardinia in the war against Austria, and then travelled to Rome in support of Mazzini's short-lived republic. After a long retreat across central Italy, Garibaldi went on to become a leading protagonist of the Italian Risorgimento.
