Science Focus
Gone are the days of boring non-fiction books just full of facts. This is a beautifully illustrated, comprehensive book about the body which is a treat for the mind, as well as a visual delight. The Teacher Bookworm
Children and parents will be absorbed by this remarkable book Carousel

Anatomicum is the most incredible book, written by Dr Jennifer Z Paxton (University of Edinburgh), illustrated by Katy Wiedemann and printed by Big Picture Press.

The book is set out as if you are walking around the inside of your body and exploring every part - much as you would when you enter a museum. You are taken on a tour chapter by chapter through the different parts of the anatomy, referring to each chapter as a 'Gallery'. As you progress through the book you discover about every system in the body, right down to how a human evolves from a single cell and what happens to us during puberty.

Gallery is an apt name for each chapter because the descriptions are accompanied by the most incredible graphic and realistic illustrations I have ever seen. Each diagram is clearly labelled (including Latin names) to tell you exactly which part is which, with a key to concisely explain each part.

The text is incredibly clear and easy to read and the descriptions are really easy to follow. The book is large, which ensures the diagrams are easy to look at and it is well spaced out, thus ensuring that an overload of information is not what you feel you're walking away with. Every subject matter is dealt with sympathetically and sensitively in a matter of fact way - thus ensuring that the journey you take through the book is one of awe and wonder about how amazing our bodies really are.

This book is absolutely invaluable for anyone starting at secondary school - as my son has just done - and I wish that a book like this had been available when I was studying the anatomy at school. Not a stone has been left unturned when creating this book and I believe it is a must-have for every household. My children find it fascinating to flick through and concentrate on an organ or system at a time. They are particularly enamoured by the illustrations, which you'd be forgiven for confusing for photographs in places, they are so good. What an amazing Christmas gift!

This was a Xmas present for my granddaughter and she was thrilled with it. I have had many texts from her telling me how many hours she has spend since 25 December looking through it written in capital letters . A perfect present for someone fascinated by the body.
