About the Author

Melanie Basinger grew up on a dairy farm in upstate New York and cannot imagine life without pets. She now lives in Virginia Beach with her husband, two coonhounds, and her pet rabbit. Melanie is a physical therapist who serves as Program Director of Tidewater Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant Program and CEO of the non-profit Therapy on the Move. Chalupa's story began the day her teenage daughter, now a veterinarian, announced we had to save "Elvis" from a pet store. Melanie is the author of seven children's books chronicling the life and adventures of her beloved Saint Bernard. Her passion is to bring Chalupa's story to children of all ages to help them learn what matters most in life. Larry Havard's passion for drawing began as a young child and grew with him throughout the years. He is a graduate of TidewaterCommunity College's PTA program, where an opportunity to illustrate a book based on two loveable pups inspired him. Larry currently residesin Virginia and enjoys spending time with his wife, two boys, and their little dachshund, Milo.
