During a five year period, between 880 and 885, a series of deaths and disappearances happened, changing the course of European history. Had they not occurred, or had their timing been altered, the Normans would not exist and England would have remained Saxon to the present day. But those events did take place, and the Normans did step through that doorway in history. Was it planned? There is no way to know.
