The Mhallami, Mahallami, or Mardelli is an Arabic-speaking tribal ethnic group traditionally living in and around the city of Mardin, Turkey. Due to migration since 1920 they have a large presence in Lebanon as well. As a result of the Lebanese Civil War, large numbers fled to Europe, particularly Germany. Their Arabic dialect is a Semitic language derived from late medieval Sicilian Arabic with Romance super-strata. It is spoken also by the Maltese people and is the national language of Malta, and the only official Semitic and Afro-Asiatic language of the European Union. This book introduces similarities between Mhallami Dialect and Maltese languages.
